INDIANAPOLIS — On a sunny 68 degree day at Lucas Oil Stadium with roof and window open, Daniel Jones looked to start a new chapter with the Colts leaving the trials and tribulations of his tenure with the Giants behind.
Oh did he ever leave those trials and tribulations behind, he left them in the dust. Jones on this day scored twice on 1-yard quarterback sneaks and threw a touchdown to Michael Pittman Jr. in the midst of leading the Colts to scores on all 7 drives of the day. This feat is something that wasn’t even accomplished by Peyton Manning, who in attendance to induct late owner, Jim Irsay in the Colts Ring of Honor. The Colts have seemed to solve their kicking woes of the past, with Spencer Shrader knocking in 4 field goals on the day.
Jones was executing with precision the plays Coach Shane Steichen was dialing up. The run game with Jonathan Taylor and DJ Giddens was effective as well setting up the play action game causing a heap of issues for the Dolphins secondary.
Defensively, new coordinator Lou Anarumo had his guys flying around all over the place looking his guys love the new scheme he’s brought in. The defense forced 3 turnovers on the day had the Miami offense dazed and confused all day long. They came within a 4 down screen pass of pitching a shutout on the day.
As we look ahead to Week 2 for the Colts, they take on a Broncos team that faces their second AFC South opponent in a row after defeating Tennessee in Week 1. The Broncos come in with a defense coordinated by Vance Joseph that loves to play a bunch of press man coverage so the onus will be Colts skill position guys to get open to give Jones an opportunity to find them. The offensive line will have to be sync as Joseph loves to show simulated pressure and back out into coverage, but he’ll also bring the pressure for real, so film study this week on what tips what’s real or fake will be of the highest importance.
Anarumo should be licking their chops after forcing 3 turnovers in Week 1 knowing that Tennessee forced quarterback Bo Nix into the 3 turnovers in Week 1. Can they look at the film of Tennessee and add some of those elements to their game plan this week to cause Bo Nix and coach Sean Payton some headaches in Lucas Oil Stadium this week? We shall see.
Here’s postgame sound from the Colts victory over the Dolphins.
